Called to Be More Than Mere Believers
Over 65% of Americans claim to be Christian. Of course, if that were truly the case, the world would be a very different place! So are they lying? Probably not. Rather we have become confused about what it means to be a disciple. Too many are like sports fans: we claim Christ largely because of what we think we’ll get out of it as opposed to seriously accepting Christ’s demand that we deny ourselves, take up the cross and follow (Luke 9:23). Inspired by Kyle Idleman’s book, “Not a Fan,” this series will challenge each of us to seriously reflect on the nature of our own discipleship and call us to become truly devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Listen Up!
Revelation’s Letters to the Church
The book of Revelation is not simply a strange, imagery laden depiction of end times. Rather it is a call to the church (then and now) to be ready, focused and about God’s purposes. “Let anyone who has ears listen!” is a phrase repeated over and over again. In other words, “Listen up!” God has something you need to hear!” As we celebrate the beginnings of the church at Pentecost we’ll explore the letters to the seven churches at the beginning of this book. While they are addressed to specific churches, these churches serve as models or types and offer guidelines to our church today. Join us for this series and be sure to listen up!

Set in stone
Discipleship Lessons from ‘The Rock’
He was named Simon, son of Jonah but his earnest, dedicated- if sometimes clumsy and faltering- faith led Jesus to rename him “Peter,” or “the rock.” His example was to provide a foundation for all the members of the Body yet to come. In his letters the apostle builds up his church, strengthening them to withstand the challenges of declaring the Good News in a hostile world. Though we don’t face the same dangers, we are also called to stand against a world that is dismissive, apathetic and resistant to Christ’s message. In this series we’ll look at some of the foundation lessons in discipleship shared in the letter of 1 Peter.

Rediscovering Jesus
Even for non-Christians, Jesus is ubiquitous in our society. From conventional pictures of his face to the crosses worn by celebrities, we think we know Him. Even in the church our picture of Jesus is often skewed by cultural misconceptions and an attempt to fit him into our own likes and preferences. In the first chapter of the letter to the Colossians is what is most likely an ancient hymn or creedal statement declaring the wonder, power and mystery that is Christ Jesus. As we begin following Jesus on the Lenten journey, we’ll use that ancient declaration to examine just who He is, wrestle with our own misunderstandings and come to terms with what it means to be His disciples in every part of our lives. Along the way we will try to answer the question Jesus posed of his first followers: exactly who do you say He is?

Swept Away
Reclaiming the Gift of Baptism
Do you have to be dunked or is sprinkling OK? What’s the difference between a baptism, a christening, a baby dedication or a confirmation? Can you go to heaven without being baptized? We begin 2023 reading the story of Jesus’ baptism by John and we’ll continue to explore the subject in this series. The word baptizo literally means “to immerse” but it carries a connotation of being overwhelmed and swept away. The sacrament has been central to the Christian faith ever since Jesus ordered his disciples to baptize new believers, but it has also been the source of much controversy and not a little confusion. Join us as we look at the various meanings of baptism and come away with a deeper, richer and more life-changing understanding of the gift we have been offered.
