Unwrapping the christmas presence
The True Reason for Celebrating Advent & Christmas
As much as we love the decorations and the tinsel and as much as we enjoy the gifts under the tree, the real celebration of Christmas comes in being surrounded by and sharing it with the ones we love. It’s really not about the presents but it is all about the presence. So too the first Christmas, and the reason we celebrate as the family of God. Emmanuel, “God with Us,” has arrived and because He has put aside Divinity to walk with us, talk with us and care for us, we can know ourselves as truly blessed. This advent we’ll explore a bit more about how God’s Presence changes our lives and attitudes.

Stories for the Journey
Walking with Jesus in Daily Life
Jesus’ most profound lessons often came in the form of stories or parables but just as often Jesus demonstrated His commandments and teachings by living them out as he traveled with His disciples. Long before the New Testament was written, the “People of the Way” told the stories of how they had experienced Jesus in everyday life and how those interactions taught what it meant to be a disciple and what God valued most. Join us as we walk alongside Jesus through the Gospel of Luke and learn those vital lessons for our own journey.

The Rebellion
Living the Risky Call of Radical, Subversive Christianity
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword!” Jesus says in Matthew 10:34. Christianity was never meant to be a passive, get-along sort of philosophy but rather a challenge to the status quo and a vehicle to change the world! As we begin a new chapter in the life of our church, it’s a good time to re-discover the nature of this radical faith and reflect on our own approach to being a Christian disciple. We’ll take some time to wrestle with the specific ministries and callings of our church and challenge one another to make a real commitment to being radical, subversive Christians.

Summer in the Psalms
The psalms are beautiful prayers and immortal hymns. They are lovely communications between God and God's People. They also tell us a great deal about who God is and how God relates to us. Join us in July for a short summer exploration of a few of these wonderful songs of faith and devotion.

All In
Embracing, Investing In and Advancing Our Faith
The mission statement for Cordele First Methodist Church calls each of us to embrace, invest in and advance Christ’s call for us to love God and neighbor and make disciples in every place. What would that look like and what part am I specifically called to fulfill in that? During Lent we got ourselves aligned with Jesus and on the right path. Now, in the light of the truth and joy of the Resurrection, it’s time to put all that into practice. In this series we’ll follow the scriptural guidelines for a vibrant discipleship and then encourage ourselves and one another to go all in- body, mind, strength and soul- for Jesus. After all, Jesus has walked out of the grave…and He invites each of us to do the same!

Can You Hear Me Now?
Cultivating a Life of Prayer
One of the great gifts of the resurrection is a newer, deeper and more direct connection with God. The need for a formal priesthood, ritual sacrifices and a single temple are no longer necessary as the “priesthood of believers (1 Peter 2:9)” can go to God directly. That’s accomplished primarily through prayer but sadly prayer is often misunderstood and poorly practiced. In this season after Easter, we’ll take a closer look at the holy gift of prayer and explore ways to enrich and deepen our connection to God. Along the way we’ll deal with some misconceptions and discover some tips and techniques for developing a truly fulfilling life of prayer.

Plotting the Course
A Lenten Series About Navigating in a Fallen World
Finding the right direction to travel requires a few tools: a map, maybe some written or spoken directions, perhaps a compass or a GPS and a bit of general knowledge. Finding the righteous (which means literally ‘the correct direction’) path through life requires a certain set of spiritual and intellectual tools as well. The Bible often frames the story of Jesus as a journey from ignorance to enlightenment, from failure to redemption and from death to life. Nowhere is that more clear than in the stories we share during Lent, the forty days before Easter. Jesus was very clear with His disciples- then and now- about what was needed to follow the path He set for them. Join us this Lenten season as we do what’s necessary to plot the course towards abundant living.

VILE
Adventures in Radical Discipleship
On April 2 , 1739 John Wesley wrote in his journal that “at 4:00, (he) submitted to be more vile and proclaimed in the highways the glad tidings of salvation.” This strange statement reflects a fundamental change in his attitude towards discipleship and the recognition that following Christ meant getting out of his comfort zone and the familiarity of religious repetition and incorporating his beliefs into radically holy living. Here in the 21st century we are also tempted to get into a comfortable rut and forget the dynamic, rebellious and world-changing purpose of Christ’s gospel. As we start 2024, we’ll dig deep into our Wesleyan roots and rediscover what Wesley called “holiness of heart and life.” Prepare also to do a little self-evaluation and accept the challenge to get up, get out and submit to be more vile. After all, it’s 4:00 somewhere!
